David Maisel may just be the right man for the job

I was reading an article at Comic Book Resources in which Milo Ventimiglia is quoted as saying: "I was actually having a conversation last night, with [Marvel Studios Chairman] David Maisel and he was talking about ‘Iron Man.’ He was basically saying that it’s a character piece where the guy just happens to be a superhero". When I read this, I realized that Maisel gets it. That one sentiment he expressed to Ventimiglia in its own way sums up everything that was right about the film version of 'Iron Man' and most of what was wrong with the film version of 'The Fantastic Four'. It's the concept that set Marvel apart from its competitors in the 1960s and onward. Hopefully, Maisel can keep this key tenant in mind as work moves forward on all of the upcoming Marvel Movies. If so, we're in for a great ride.

Marvel Studios to buy studio lot in LA, if...

The LA Times is reporting that 'Iron Man' director Jon Favreau and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger are trying to push the state of California to offer tax breaks to film and television productions in an effort to keep these productions from moving their operations to other states. One bargaining chip Favreau has in his favor is the possibility that Marvel Studios may buy a studio in LA and film up to four movies there - if certain tax incentives are enacted.

Justin Theroux on 'Iron Man 2' script: "everything's on the table"

There's a new interview with 'Iron Man 2' writer Justin Theroux up at Crave Online. For the most part he's discussing 'Tropic Thunder', but he briefly touches upon 'Iron Man 2', indicating that he's just now getting started on the script and that at this point, nothing about the story has been narrowed down.

Discord on 'Wolverine' set?

'Hollywood elsewhere' is reporting on some issues that seem to indicate a disconnect (at the least) between the film's director, Gavin Hood, and Fox co-chairman and CEO Tom Rothman. Now I was under the impression that principal photography on 'Wolverine' had already wrapped, so I'm not sure what we can take from this story.

Jon Favreau an 'Iconoclast'

The Sundance Channel series 'Iconoclasts' gets two leading innovators from different fields together to discuss their respective passions. One of the pairs to be featured in the upcoming fourth season will be Jon Favreau and Tony Hawk. The series premiers Thursday, October 16, 2008, at 10 PM ET/PT. I would imagine that Favreau will discuss 'Iron Man' somewhat, and perhaps comic books/films in general.
